The team: Piquet Sports

“Piquet Sports” in this constellation is still a newcomer to the GP2 series. The team competed under the name “ Minardi Piquet Sports” since the beginning of 2007.

Following the Formula 1 exit by Minardi the “Minard Team by GP Racing” was founded in 2006. Minardi’s intention was to conserve 20 years of Formula 1 experience and use it meaningfully. And the objective for the GP2 series corresponded to this: on the one hand one wanted to succeed in GP 2 and on the other hand planned to support young talented drivers and prepare them for Formula 1.

“HiTech Piquet Sports” had already been christened one year previously. And the second year in the GP 2 series already brough on spectacular successes in 2006. Nelson Piquet jr secured the vice-championship title. Additionally the second place in the team ranking was won in collaboration with his Brazilian teammate Alexandre “Xandi” Negrao.

Following the merger at the beginning of last year Giancarlo Bada became president. Gian Carlo Minardi was honorary president. For the year 2008 one decided amicably to enter the season under the name “Piquet Sports”. Tancredi Pagiaro, who had founded GP Racing already in 1997, serves as general manager.

As far as Andreas Zuber is concerned Felipe Vargas is the most important man in the team. The 39-year-old Brazilian not only serves as team director but also is Andreas Zuber’s track engineer. Vargas recevied his doctorate in electrical engineering at the University of Brasilia in 1993. From 1993 to 1999 he was technical director of a Formula 3 team in South America. Since 2000 he has been team director of Piquet Sports and made his way through all stations from Formula 3 to the GP2 series.
